Hindi Typing Guide for Beginners
Whether you are a government employee, a DTP operator, or a student, learning to type in Hindi is an essential skill in modern India. This guide covers everything you need to get started with Hindi typing — from keyboard layouts to installing fonts.
Step 1: Choose Your Keyboard Layout
There are two main keyboard layouts for Hindi typing:
- Inscript Layout: This is the official Indian government standard. Keys map directly to Devanagari characters. It is the recommended layout for government jobs and exams.
- Phonetic (Remington) Layout: Characters are placed based on their phonetic sound in English. Many experienced typists prefer this layout as it feels intuitive.
Step 2: Enable Hindi Keyboard in Windows
- Go to Settings → Time & Language → Language
- Click Add a language and search for Hindi
- Install it and set the keyboard to Hindi Inscript
- Use Win + Space to switch between English and Hindi keyboard
Step 3: Unicode vs Legacy Fonts
When typing in Unicode (recommended for modern use), your text will work on any device or website. However, if your office or printing press uses legacy software like CorelDRAW or PageMaker, you may need to convert your Unicode text to Shree Lipi format. Use our free Unicode to Shree Lipi Converter to do this instantly.
